Location
Whatipū is a scenic destination 42 kms from Central Auckland and 25 kms (30 minutes) from Titirangi Village.
Once you have reached Titirangi, go through the shopping centre past Lopdell House, (on the left) to the roundabout, take the first turn left onto Huia Road and stay on this road all the way to Huia, (15 kms).
Continue through Huia, past the Huia Store, around the foreshore and across the single lane bridge. Turn left up the hill and drive past the Huia Museum, Hall and Ranger Station. Continue around the picturesque foreshore until you reach the Marama Stream at Little Huia. Cross the stream at the ford and turn right onto the start of Whatipū Road. Sometimes the spring tides wash over the ford.
Note: Very rarely, during extreme weather, the ford may not be passable. If in doubt, please wait and seek advice from locals.
Whatipū Road is narrow, elevated and winding. Keep left. Careful driving is needed all the way. The last 6 km is gravel and there may be oncoming cars so extra caution is required. We advise using a lower gear on the downhill sections.
The Whatipū Lodge entrance is on the right just before the end of the road, the driveway is clearly marked.
The Whatipū Bach and Campground entrance is at the very end of the road. Continue past the Whatipū Lodge entrance into the Whatipū Beach public carpark, drive towards the green fence on the right of the public carpark and turn left over the small bridge. The turning space to cross the bridge is restricted to vehicles less than 8 metres long. Please do not drive into the Whatipū Lodge gate if staying at the Campground or Bach.
